Outpost Week 12 ...Not Only Bears Hibernate

We've moved. Call us a wuss, a wimp or a weakling but as they say “ if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen” or in our case “if you can't stand the cold move into your bedroom.” We did just that.
This last week has seen the mercury fall bit by bit. I swear some mornings it seems warmer outside than in. We enjoy the daily routine of sitting in our favourite chairs (Mike in the big leather club chair and I in the wing back) drinking coffee, listening to the radio (news channel) surfing the internet and taking in the view. For 2 hours each morning, yes I know 2 HOURS ! but it's not like we have a office or business to rush off too, anyways it was getting to the point where we couldn't drink the coffee fast enough before it turned cold.

Start a fire, you might say. Well we do but try not too until around 3 pm in the afternoon. Do you know how much wood you burn through on a daily bases ...a lot. We also find ourselves in a 'catch 22' situation, because the wood we are burning is wet we have been using the oven to dry out kindling to get things going, works like a charm but we have decided that until we see the barge rounding the corner into our bay we are going to conserve our propane.

No dry kindling, no fire, no heat....so where does leave us.... in our bedroom or as we are now calling it “the Florida room”.

It's a big enough room that we have brought in a table and 2 chairs, plus our TV. With 2 small heaters pumping out hot air it is heaven, the only thing we miss is the radio. Hey nothing's perfect and I'm actually down to one layer of clothes.

As I am writing this, Wednesday night, the Christmas plane is scheduled to fly in here tomorrow afternoon (hooray!) bearing gifts of furnace parts and holiday cheer, so with any luck the last picture in this blog will be of the plane landing in our bay. Keep your fingers crossed!
We do venture out of the 'Florida room' to do the daily tasks that need to be done like visiting with the cats, filling the genny with diesel, walking down to the docks with feed for the fish and than I usually end up meandering along the beach to see what's found it's way to our shores, making meals which these days have been simple and fast and washing dishes.... always dishes.

Spending a little more time than normal on the computer I have been searching out holiday recipes for hot appies, festive cookies, toffies, brittles and fudge. I've had this urge for fudge but have never had much luck finding the perfect recipe and on occasion having it end up more like icing. That reminds me of a story having to do with fudge and a hurricane yet I best not get sidetracked.... this is my latest attempt at chocolate fudge with walnuts and dried sweet cherries. Didn't turn out too bad but still not the 'fudge to die for.'

As always my camera is with me whenever I go outside and was lucky to capture this feathered visitor before he saw me......

................and took flight.

Cool as it was in the living area of the lodge I just had to have my hair cut.
'Mr. Michael's' is still the best place to go and despite the blood and cries (not always from me) of ouch, oops and 'it'll grow back' he does a better job than some of the salons I have paid dearly to go to.

While we don't get the gorgeous view of mountains and water from the 'Florida room' we still get to see when nature comes to call. This young lady is new around here, at least we've never seen her before. Curious enough to look when called but not familiar enough to come over.

Last picture.

As you can see the plane didn't make it in. :( The weather forecast had called for high winds and as promised they delivered. Tomorrow is another day and another attempt to fly into the OP around noon will be made. The weather forecast is encouraging so with any luck by this time tomorrow, Friday 6pm, I will be as red as a lobster due to a very very long hot shower.

Till next week,
Heather & Mike
