Turkey and a Storm.....Week 5

By now you've all had your fill of turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey casserole & turkey a' la king. Mike and I enjoyed a lovely evening at “Heather's Oceanside All
Night Diner." Great meal, fabulous ocean views and never a wait for a table!

Had our first real storm of the season Saturday night. The wind sounding like a long drawn out whistle announced it's arrival. Over the din of the pelleting rain and hail which came close on it's heels we could only assume that it was branches being torn from nearby trees that were striking the lodge.
While the nights are still warm we shut down the genny before we go to bed, saves fuel, good thing. The silence and darkness are so sudden it takes your senses a second to adjust. Not a speck, glimmer or sliver of light anywhere! You really can't imagine how black our world has become. You never go out without a flashlight or you'd be lost in the dark and that would be a different type of scary than last week's “lost” episode.

This is a picture of my hand
in front of my face!

This total blackout also has an upside. On a clear night we'll walk down to the dock , listen to the ocean and stare upwards to the heavens. The amount of stars is mind boggling. Truly amazing. We make wishes on shooting stars and keep track of who spots the pin point of light careening across the sky. I wonder if that is the elusive satellite that we are trying to get a fix on.

What does astonish us is a particular tree right behind the lodge. Last year (I think) a storm much worse, uprooted this giant. Unfortunately it's decent was hampered by fellow trees, the upper branches becoming gingerly intertwined. It was an unstable hazard which we gave a wide berth when walking in that area. The power of the wind swayed the trees enough to loosen their hold and the tree fell once more. Yet again it was halted, 10 ft above the mossy ground it now stays suspended but very solid.
I bet there is at least 4 cords of wood there if only you could get to it.
                                                 Maybe a bigger saw?

Till next week,
Heather & Mike

  2. Thank's Ken. I feel lucky to get a comment already as I have just started to post. Family and friends have been encouraging me to do so but to get feedback from a fellow blogger means a lot.
